Medgidia, the Town that Was is the novel of a multicultural Dobrudja town and a family. It presents the complicated history of the little town and also of Romania in the 1940s through the fate of the railway station restaurant’s owner and other characters. The everyday life of a number of vivacious people is presented to the reader, often in a humorous tone: Romanians Gypsies, Russians, Turks, Tartars, Armenians and Jews sharing a living space, becoming either inert tools of history or, quite the contrary, successfully maintaining their integrity thanks to their wisdom and experience of life.
